Research and development

From theory to practice

ETH Zurich, Institute of Virtual Manufacturing, D-MAVT

The IVP is specialized in the digital modeling of manufacturing processes. This includes in particular the virtual validation of entire manufacturing chains. In the field of forming processes, the main tasks are both the optimization of process steps and the mathematical representation of influences caused, for example, by material fluctuations or changes in tribological conditions. To the strengths of the IVP belong the specially developed material and failure models, which are required for an exact digital process mapping.

For the simulation of fine blanking processes, the IVP uses the FEM program FineFormTM. The code which is an in-house development, is based on the ALE method with a special automatic remeshing option particularly adapted for cutting processes The benefits to commercial codes are significant advantages both in terms of computation accuracy as well as in computation speed due to the conformal modelling of the FE-meshes.

A digital process monitoring and digital quality control are increasingly established as new areas of application in the context of process digitization.

For the automatic detection of surface defects, the IVP has developed the "Industry 4.0" specific systems OptoGuardTM, MatGuardTM und Q-GuardTM, which enable optical detection of surface defects, inline material property monitoring as well as feedback and direct intelligent correction of process parameters.

The IVP is under the direction of Prof. Dr. Pavel Hora since 2005. The IVP software tools have been among the market leaders in the field of forming technology simulations for more than 20 years. AutoForm, which originates from IVP, is the world market leader in the field of sheet metal forming. The institute's work has been honored several times with renowned prizes such as the Johann Puch Automotive Awards (2016, 2018) or the ESAFORM Award for the best industrial doctoral thesis in 2019.

Worth to mention are also the IVP’s activities in the Formula Student Electric Competition (FSE). In close collaboration with the AMZ our students achieve excellent rankings in the competition. Due to this work, which has resulted in numerous bachelor theses, the IVP can also demonstrate extensive know-how in the field of electric vehicles (High-performance electric motors, transmissions, battery, battery management, control systems recuperation).

Your benefits:

  • Worldwide recognized institute in the field of "special purpose" FEM packages
  • Development of exact failure models for predicting of forming limits
  • Competence in the field of "smart" production systems
  • Development of innovative forming systems

Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University

Around the world, the Laboratory Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University is synonymous with successful as well as forward-thinking research and innovation in the area of production.

Projects related to basic research as well as projects targeted at the requirements of the industry are performed in six research areas, and practice-oriented solutions for rationalizing production are also developed. The goal of addressing the entire area of production technology under one roof has resulted in a broad work area, which is oriented towards the corporate divisions of development and construction, quality management, organization, planning operations, production and assembly as well as control and automation.

The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) is managed by four professors: Christian Brecher (machine tools, machine data analytics, excellence clusters internet of production, gear technology), Thomas Bergs (manufacturing technology and gear technology), Robert Schmitt (production metrology and quality management) and Günther Schuh (production engineering).

One of the research priorities of the Department of Manufacturing Technology is fineblanking. Through holistic treatment of the interaction between tool, fineblanked component and machine using experimental and numerical methods, research questions addressing the issues of wear, coatings, component quality, tools, and new aspects like Fineblanking 4.0 are answered.

Your benefits:

  • High level of methodological competence and implicit knowledge of the development and implementation of research projects
  • Tradition and expertise in the field of fineblanking
  • Pre-competitive, cross-industry collective research with companies in the fineblanking research circle

Technical University of Munich, Chair of Metal Forming and Casting – utg

Since the foundation of the chair in 1968, shear cutting, including the technique of fineblanking, has been an important pillar of competence in our research work.

Many successful research projects at utg prove the advantages of fineblanking for a wide range of components compared to other cutting processes.

In addition to pure cut parts, we are now researching with our Feintool press on the producibility of complex components in a high clean-cut ratio. We work closely and successfully with Feintool and have regularly expanded the horizons of what is technically feasible, especially in the future areas of massive lightweight construction and innovative gearwheel manufacture using the internal stresses induced by production technology.

Simulation is another important component of our work. Virtual investigations provide us with insights into processes in the tool and in the material during the fine blanking process. This combination of experiment and simulation is the basis for our chair to be able to make an essential contribution to the expansion of the application possibilities of fine blanking in the future.

Your benefits:

  • High level of methodological competence and experience in planning and running research projects
  • Numerous flexible fineblanking tools
  • Large measurement and analytical possibilities in tools and parts
